Hello,

Could you explain to me when I should use "which" instead of "what"?

Cheers

Hello Eowyn,

These two words are often mixed up. The rule is simple.

We use "which" when there is a limited choice.

We use "what" when there is a wide choice (many possibilities)
For example :

Which size do you want- small, medium or large? (a limited choice)

What is your shose size ? (many possible choices)

But be careful, before “of” and “one” you can use “which” but not “what”.
Example: Which of the countries in Europe have you visited? (not what..)
Look at all those stars. Which one is the nearest? (not what ..)

I hope that helps clear it up for you.
