Age verification tech grows as governments push for online controls
As governments crack down on online platforms from social networks to porn sites, age verification technology is booming. In most cases, all it requires is taking a head-on selfie with a phone or computer camera, and an automated decision is made within a minute. If the system is not able to make a decision based on a photo or video, it will ask for a government ID. The technology promises speed and accuracy in implementing laws like Australia's social media ban for under-16s, in force from 10 December.
Humanoid robots go face-to-face in the ring

"Are You Dead?", an app that sounds the alarm if a user doesn't check in every 48 hours, is one of China's top-selling paid apps. More and more people in the world's second-largest economy are living alone as marriage rates decline and the number of elderly empty-nesters grows. In 2024, people who lived alone accounted for around one fifth of all Chinese households, compared to 15 percent a decade earlier, official data shows.
